Snow Day at the Studio

Today it was snowy and grey so I stayed in all day working on my next hardcover book. I’m so pleased with the results. Im using heavier papers and thicker boards which made it feel very substantial to hold, even for a smallish book. I found some faux leather for book binding i bought almost 5 years ago and used it along the spine. The whole thing feels so smooth inside and out and has a luster that I just melt for.

MMH! *chefs kiss*

The inky abstracts I worked on last week made perfect covers. I am so happy with the improvements from past attempts. No wobbly binding or weird gaps or wrapped covers. This time instead of consulting my books on books, I followed a YouTube tutorial. I swear sometimes its just more efficient to watch a good demo. It always helps to see alternative approaches too.

Here is the flip side. I’m still on the fence on which will be the front and which will be the back. But I do know that I want to add a closure. So once a button is added, it will be decided.

I spent some time digging in dusty boxes looking for the perfect button to attach to the cover. A lot of stuff is still packed up from the move, but i was able to put my hands on a box of old jewelry, buttons, and beads that belonged to grandma. I’m dying to use these things in my artwork. They are so wonderful and fancy. Plus it would be a shame to see these lonely earrings and tarnished bobbles not have a second life. They are just too pretty and too valuable.

It annoys me that I miss her. But playing with her jewelry together was something I always loved. One of the few times we really got along. It feels good to touch these things and imagine when she wore them last and what she wore them with. She was so stylish and had such taste for beautiful, elegant things. And she loved to sparkle and show off. Haha! She was like a movie star to me…..

But I digress…

It’s been a cozy and productive day…..
