VLOG: Echoes in Objects
In this installment…
In this vlog entry, I talk about reconnecting with some of the ephemera i found at my grandmother’s house when I was cleaning it out. I want to use these things in my book making and collage work so I spent some time pulling some materials together for work I plan to make…
There were some really beautiful photos. A true glimpse of her everyday life in NY from the 50’s and 60’s. Some fading and distressed and some in perfect condition. A few familiar faces and places— but from a time before I was born.
I next thing I pulled was a phonebook from the town she lived in from 1980. This was a blast from the past full of ads from businesses that I actually remembered going to from my visits as a kid. A handful of these business are still around today.
I also found stacks of novels. I plucked one at random called “The Pain of Being Human” (1974). I dont know who bought this book or why but it’s strong with retro existential vibes…and I love it. I tore out some of these pages and did some abstract mark making with ink on them. I’m surely using these in some collages.
Once I put these things together, I looked around for some other ink works I had done earlier this month that would coordinate. I’ve already started experimenting with these things and cant wait to share the resulting work. Till then, I’m very happy to just…commune…and listen closely to the echoes in the objects.
