Black Woman Genius
Studio Visit : Glenda Richardson
I paid a visit to one of my most favorite fiber artists, Glenda Richardson. Her work and achievements are really inspiring. She is a quilter specializing in portraits and story quilts. To me they are like fabric collages. I love how she marries bold organic patterns, strong structured piecing, and fluid stitching throughout her quilts. There’s also a lot of interesting play with words, ephemera, found objects, and small details to discover when you zoom in to the work.
Here’s a little book I made for her out of her business cards while we caught up and gabbed about art, ideas, and our latest inspirations. I made tiny collages inside using washi tape with gold accents (cuz i just gotta have some gold in the mix). I made a closure from a bead that a friend gifted her from her trip to Africa.
I love to work small like this. It came out so cute and making collages from her art made the book feel really personalized.
Fun Fact: I designed the original business card for her too so this was a fun remix of a graphic design project.
