Box Making

I recently took a box making class at the Center for Book Arts in NYC. And it was kind of amazing. I’ve been wanting to take this class for a couple of years now but this was the perfect time.

First of all, it was good for me to get out of working in isolation and be around other people who were enthusiastically as geeked out as I was over paper, adhesives, and constructing boxes for their handmade books and other artsy objects. You need a tribe….ya know?

It was an intensive course, which was a great challenge. I completed several beautiful boxes. Though they aren’t perfect… I am very proud of them. I learned so much to inform some experimental ideas moving forward. I especially want to incorporate objects that I’ve found that belonged to my grandparents. (I’m determined to create a closure/lock from a cufflink!)

Overall…this class really boosted my confidence in following through with these ideas. I see dioramas, sculptures, and the perfect little cases/homes for previous artwork and books I’ve made.
