Box Making #2

Handmade box wrapped in fabric. Lid with linen paper and ink abstracts by Sheeba Maya ©2024. Misha approved.

Yesterday I shared one of the boxes I made at the Center for Book Arts, NYC. I’m really proud of it. It’s adorable and gave me lots of ideas. But for the other boxes I wanted to make there, I really wanted to include my own art in some way into the decoration. CBA provided a lot of beautiful western and Japanese papers…but I really wanted needed to make a box that said “Sheeba made this”

I have stacks of these abstract inks I made on linen paper. So for the lid of this box, I used one from my yellow/black phase. This color combo had a grip on me for a while….I call it bumble. I lined it all around with different shades of dark grey fabrics. I like how the shadows cast by the box onto itself create different depths of grey-blacks that coordinate with the washes of ink on top. I love the fluid design against the rigid construction. The box has some weight to it…I used 100pt board. Together with these yummy textures…it feels special and lux. Next time I make one, I will line the inside with velvet. Maybe some gold hardware somewhere….

I placed this box on my bar next to some champagne bottles. I think I’ll use it to store a couple of linen napkins and a corkscrew….fancy.
